Schocking Technologies - An Overview

Shocking Technologies, Inc. started operations in 2006 as a privately held, venture-backed company developing Voltage Switchable Dielectric materials. A VSD material is a polymer nano-composite that behaves like an insulator (dielectric) during normal circuit operation and becomes conductive when the voltage across the VSD material increases beyond a predefined threshold voltage. The voltage switches back to an insulator again after the voltage drops below the threshold. This unique property, coupled with the ability to tailor the response of the material, opens up several new areas in electronics. The first application being introduced enables embedded electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection in printed circuit boards (PCBs) and semiconductor packages. Subsequent applications will usher in new manufacturing processes as well as novel product designs.

Partnering with Industry Leaders
Shocking Technologies’ VSD™ materials are redefining the way in which designers and manufacturers approach next generation product builds. Because the material is embedded into the printed circuit board or substrate, our partnerships span all levels of design, assembly and test.

From copper foil producers to laminators of PCB core materials to substrate manufacturers and EMS providers; our intent is to ensure flawless integration and qualification of the VSD™ material at each level in the supply chain. Because the material can be laminated, drilled and plated using the same manufacturing processes that the printed circuit board industry uses today, the integration of VSD™ materials is expected to be a straightforward practice.

Further complimenting our relationships with key materials providers and manufacturers are the partnerships we are establishing with EDA/CAD providers, ensuring that our VSD™ material can be easily designed-in by our customers to launch tomorrow’s products.

Xstatic Polymer
We offer CAD and applications engineering services to help integrate VSD™ material into new or existing designs. Data sheets and design guidelines for the XStatic™ family of VSD™ polymers are available to our customers upon request. Our application engineers have over 20 years experience in PCB design integration and associated manufacturing techniques. We can assist your design team as an extended resource. We can also provide training and Q/A forums to insure proper implementation of XStatic™ VSD™ core materials.

ESD surge Protection & ESD Protection Testing
While the VSD™ material functions as an insulator, the normal current path is not affected. When the rapid increase in voltage triggers the protection properties of the VSD™ material during an ESD event (i.e., clamping voltage), its ability to carry large amounts of current is enabled. For this purpose Electronic device ESD Protection is used.
