The California Newspapers Partnership on Tuesday Launched the TapIn Bay Area iPad App

The California Newspapers Partnership on Tuesday launched the TapIn Bay Area iPad app, which brings together coupons, events, restaurant and other business listings, and feature stories, photos and video, to give users an insiders' guide to what's going on in their neighborhood and across the Bay Area.

The app is free for now. Once the $4.99 monthly subscription takes effect, users will be able to earn back the subscription value by participating in Tapin activities, from participating in discussions to sharing photos and browsing stories.

"The app, developed in collaboration with California Newspapers Partnership and a local start-up Tackable, plots news, coupons, events, deals, photos, hiking trails, and featured video into an exploratory experience," said Steve Rossi, CEO of CNP, California's largest news organization and the owner of this newspaper. "There is so much to discover in this amazing area. This is our effort to help locals connect and get the most out of life around the Bay."

The app includes three modes: "on tap,'' which provides a Bay Area-wide look at the important events, stories and deals of the day; 'explore,' which lets users zoom in closer to their neighborhood on a map that displays local events, deals and more; and, 'find,' which allows users to filter and find exactly what they're interested in.

The app includes a community component in which content managers will post "gigs" asking users to review a local event or create other content. Those who do earn points, which along with the points they accumulate as they use the app can be redeemed for merchandise or used toward free subscriptions to the monthly service.
